    An optogenetic headstage for optical stimulation and neural recording in life science applications

    L'optogénétique est une nouvelle méthode de contrôle de l’activité neuronale dans laquelle la lumière est employée pour activer ou arrêter certains neurones. Dans le cadre de ce travail, un dispositif permettant l’acquisition de signaux neuronaux et conduisant à une stimulation optogénétique de façon multicanale et temps-réel a été conçu. Cet outil est muni de deux canaux de stimulation optogénétique et de deux canaux de lecture des signaux neuronaux. La source de lumière est une DEL qui peut consommer jusqu’à 150 milliampères. Les signaux neuronaux acquis sont transmis à un ordinateur par une radio. Les dimensions sont d’environ 20×20×15 mm3 et le poids est de moins de 7 grammes, rendant l’appareil utile pour les expériences sur les petits animaux libres. Selon nos connaissances actuelles, le résultat de ce projet constitue le premier appareil de recherche optogénétique sans-fil, compact offrant la capture de signaux cérébraux et la stimulation optique simultanée.Optogenetics is a new method for controlling the neural activity where light is used to activate or silence, with high spatial and temporal resolution, genetically light-sensitized neurons. In optogenetics, a light source such as a LED, targets light-sensitized neurons. In this work, a light-weight wireless animal optogenetic headstage has been designed that allows multi-channel simultaneous real-time optical stimulation and neural recording. This system has two optogenetic stimulation channels and two electrophysiological reading channels. The optogenetic stimulation channels benefit from high-power LEDs (sinking 150 milliamps) with flexible stimulation patterns and the recorded neural data is wirelessly sent to a computer. The dimensions of the headstage are almost 20×20×15 mm3 and it weighs less than 7 grams. This headstage is suitable for tests on small freely-moving rodents. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first reported fully wireless headstage to offer simultaneous multichannel optical stimulation along with multichannel neural recording capability

    Changing QRS Morphology: What is the mechanism?

    ECG in sinus rhythm with ventricular preexcitation and changing QRS morphology was seen that was initially interpreted as the multiple accessory pathway from elsewhere. (Figure 1A). The following mechanisms are potentially involved in the electrogenesis of changing QRS morphology in WPW syndrome: 1) multiple accessory pathways1; 2) simultaneous occurrence of aberrant atrioventricular conduction with accessory pathway conduction 2; 3) ventricular fusion of preexcited sinus impulse with ectopic impulse. Electrophysiologic study showed short PR (75 ms) interval with wide QRS (152 ms) and negative HV (-12 ms) interval. No change in delta wave polarity was observed during HRA and CS pacing. In full preexcitation, no breakthrough was seen in the CS. During incremental ventricular pacing, atrial breakthrough site is initially recorded on the HRA catheter and then changed to distal pole of CS catheter with progressive decrease in pacing cycle length. During ventricular pacing at cycle length of 500 ms (S1), earliest atrial activity is recorded on HRA catheter. Changing QRS could not be explained by presence of multiple APs because only right-sided AP had bidirectional conduction and no distal CS breakthrough was seen simultaneous with changing QRS morphology. The possibility of aberrant conduction is excluded by presence of negative HV interval in the beats with differing QRS morphology. No sinus cycle length variation before and after the beats with different morphologies are against the occurrence of functional LBBB. The prematurity of ventricular electrogram in His recording catheter with variable HV (H-electrogram is recorded after V-electrogram in second beat and before V-electrogram in third beat) and fixed V-RB intervals (interval from ventricular electrogram in His to the RB potential) are compatible with ventricular fusion of preexcited sinus impulse with ectopic ventricular impulse originating from parahissian area (explaining LBBB and inferior axis morphology of the beats with changing QRS) but not from the His bundle or RBB itself (because H-electrogram and RB potential is recorded after V-electrogram in the second beat with greater degree of ventricular fusion)(Figure 1B)

    Internet (Information/Skill) Literacy in Iran

    This study examines the associations of internet information literacy with two variables: (1) the ability to work with technical aspects of the internet (internet skill), and (2) attitudes about the need for qualitative necessities in the development of e-services. A hierarchical regressions software analyzes data from a national sample of 2134 internet users. In this paper, internet literacy is considered as a literacy which has two-dimensional aspects including information literacy and skill literacy. In an articulation as this, many of the capabilities associated with the internet such as technical, critical, analytical, and structural factors are studied. In addition, abilities that lead users to make distinctions between useful, safe and healthy data and fake, hateful and unhealthy data are taken into account. The analysis shows that the internet information literacy is positively related to internet skills. It is also shown that more internet information literacy leads to more demands for e-services’ qualitative necessities (in the eight indicators of cheapness, availability, usability, quickness, security, integrity, reliability, and transparency). Furthermore, some sociodemographic characteristics (i.e. age, gender, education, income, and place of residence) are explicitly associated with internet skills. Strategy suggestions are concluded for policy making in the respective fields

    Intra/Inter communications in Social Network and Intermediary of the Media Influencers

    This paper focuses on the role of influencers as an element of modern governance. As the fields of media, entertainment industry, and politics become increasingly interconnected, the phenomenon of influencer potentially affects many aspects of political life, such as campaigning and voting, policymaking, and international affairs. Using the network analysis method and applying a triple typification of influencers consists of media influencers, influencer politicians in power, and influencer opposition politicians out of power, and selecting 245 nodes on Instagram accounts, the article focuses on how do influencers interact within communication networks? Based on the triple typification, the article tries to find the pattern of networked political communications between influencers in the social network. The results prove that all three types of influencers are more interested in intra-group communication. However, both influencer politicians in power and influencer opposition politicians out of power have relatively similar tendencies to associate with media influencers

    Western Islam and Islamophobia Duality; Case Study of a Selected Facebook Native English speakers

    From ancient times, the two Islamic and western civilizations expanded their rule over a large part of the world, and today, they have their dramatic confrontation. This research tries to examine the nature of this conflict, the destructive features and constructive interactions between the two in the existing atmosphere that as the result of social media like Facebook has gathered people from different nationalities and religions. The researcher has had an active participation in Facebook for two years , during which he has collected some documents and conducted interviews about two dominant themes, namely Islamophobia and Roman Islam, and after coding them has carried out Fairclough discourse analysis. The results show that the Roman Islam discourse is much weaker than Islamophobia, and offers a decorated and merciful picture, not of the genuine Islam, but the one supported by the west, paving the way for Islamophobic assaults, and this latter is expressed with a more popular approach to and criticism of the western media and officials

    Flexible, polarization-diverse UWB antennas for implantable neural recording systems

    Implanted antennas for implant-to-air data communications must be composed of material compatible with biological tissues. We design single and dual-polarization antennas for wireless ultra-wideband neural recording systems using an inhomogeneous multi-layer model of the human head. Antennas made from flexible materials are more easily adapted to implantation; we investigate both flexible and rigid materials and examine performance trade-offs. The proposed antennas are designed to operate in a frequency range of 2-11 GHz (having S11 below -10 dB) covering both the 2.45 GHz (ISM) band and the 3.1-10.6 GHz UWB band. Measurements confirm simulation results showing flexible antennas have little performance degradation due to bending effects (in terms of impedance matching). Our miniaturized flexible antennas are 12 mm×12 mm and 10 mm×9 mm for single- and dual-polarizations, respectively. Finally, a comparison is made of four implantable antennas covering the 2-11 GHz range: 1) rigid, single polarization, 2) rigid, dual polarization, 3) flexible, single polarization and 4) flexible, dual polarization. In all cases a rigid antenna is used outside the body, with an appropriate polarization. Several advantages were confirmed for dual polarization antennas: 1) smaller size, 2) lower sensitivity to angular misalignments, and 3) higher fidelity

    The 808 nm Laser-Assisted Surgery as an Adjunct to Orthodontic Treatment of Delayed Tooth Eruption

    Introduction: Failure of teeth to erupt from gingival tissues at usual developmental time is called delayed tooth eruption (DTE). Delayed tooth eruption lead to prolonged fixed orthodontic treatment and its eventual complications. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the effect of laser-assisted (808 nm) surgical uncovering, on the tooth emergence and orthodontic treatment of DTE.Methods: A total of 16 orthodontic patients were included in this study and were equally assigned to an experimental and a control group. Subjects for experiment consisted of eight patients (6 girls and 2 boys) with a mean age of 14±0.9 years. All patients exhibited delayed second premolar eruption. The laser wavelength was 810 nm and it was set in a continuous wave mode at a power output of 1.6 watt with a 0.3-mm diameter fiber tip. When the target tissue was sufficiently anesthetized, the tip was directed at an angle of 10 to 20 degrees to the tissue (light contact mode); and was applied continuously for approximately 12 Seconds until an acceptable tooth exposure area was visible. The facial axis of the clinical crown (FACC) line represents the most prominent portion of the facial central lobe for premolars. All orthodontic brackets are aligned along this reference and are located on FA (Facial Axis) point. The standard for adequate tooth eruption was the accessibility of facial axis of the clinical crown (FACC) for bonding the brackets. Data gathered from the patients were statistically surveyed and compared by means of Tukey’s Test and Analysis of Variance (ANOVA).Results: All patients showed good gingival status, no significant bleeding during or immediately after the surgery, and acceptable level of healing after laser surgery. The biologic width of the teeth was preserved and no violation of this important periodontal parameter was observed. The average time for accessing the FA point in experimental group was 11±1.1 weeks and the mentioned period was increased to 25±1.8 weeks in control group. The data analysis showed that in patients with DTE, laser intervention significantly accelerated tooth eruption (P < 0.05).Conclusion: Laser-assisted surgical removal of the fibrous tissue over erupting premolars (DTE) with appropriate irradiation parameters appears to be a promising adjunct to orthodontic treatment for bringing the premolar to the aligned and leveled dental arch

    Early Risk stratification for Arrhythmic death in Patients with ST-Elevation Myocardial Infarction

    BACKGROUND: Sudden cardiac death is a leading cause of death in patients with ST-elevation myocardial infarction (MI). According to high cost of modern therapeutic modalities it is of paramount importance to define protocols for risk stratification of post-MI patients before considering expensive devices such as implantable cardioverter-defibrillator. METHODS: One hundred and thirty seven patients with acute ST-elevation MI were selected and underwent echocardiographic study, holter monitoring and signal-averaged electrocardiography (SAECG). Then, the patients were followed for 12 ±3 months. RESULTS: During follow-up, 13 deaths (9.5%) occurred; nine cases happened as sudden cardiac death (6.6%). The effect of ejection fraction (EF) less than 40% on occurrence of arrhythmic events was significant (P<0.001). Sensitivity and positive predictive value of EF<40% was 100% and 76.95% respectively. Although with lesser sensitivity and predictive power than EF<40%, abnormal heart rate variability (HRV) and SAECG had also significant effects on occurrence of sudden death (P=0.02 and P=0.003 respectively). Nonsustained ventricular tachycardia was not significantly related to risk of sudden death in this study (P=0.20). CONCLUSION: This study indicated that EF less than 40% is the most powerful predictor of sudden cardiac death in post MI patients. Abnormal HRV and SAECG are also important predictors and can be added to EF for better risk stratification
